Tigue

Tigue is a group of three percussionists with a fluid musical identity. The trio (Matt Evans, Amy Garapic and Carson Moody) makes their own kinetic and hypnotic blend of instrumental minimalism while opening up the possibilities of their instrumentation through commissioning and collaboration. Their boldly colored compositions mix tightly crafted rhythmic structures with ambient textures and frenetic improvisations. Recognizing the innate theater of percussion, the trio utilizes the visual aspect of their performances to embody non-hierarchical organization and develop a movement-focused musical language. With a highly collaborative spirit, Tigue has integrated their vocabulary with bands Deerhoof and Yo La Tengo as well as composers Elori Saxl and Lea Bertucci. Praised for their focused and “high octane” productions (New York Times), the Ohio-born band members have worked together since they were practically children.

Tigue’s 2018 album Strange Paradise (released with New Amsterdam Records and NNA Tapes) weaves an entrancing musical world from myriad instruments, both acoustic, analog and electronic, on a sublime and playfully intricate suite of rhythmelodic, Reichian studies in avant-classical and ambient minimalism. As a result, Strange Paradise is a luminous, abstract, non-narrative world that funnels inspiration from patterns, objects, and relationships. Though the music floats from the serene to the uncanny, it is perhaps most notable for providing a distinct sensation of interconnectedness. Tigue’s debut album Peaks was released in 2015 with New Amsterdam Records and combines their unique and genuine percussive compositions with embellishments from members of indie-rock heavyweights Oneida and Yo La Tengo. Their own work and numerous collaborations have led the trio to highlighted performances at the Le Guess Who? Festival, PASIC, The Kitchen, the Ecstatic Music Festival, Bric Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, and the Zemlika Festival in Durbe, Latvia. Recent commissions and premieres have included works by Elori Saxl, Lea Bertucci, Paula Matthusen, Molly Herron, Randy Gibson, Jason Treuting, Adrian Knight and Robert Honstein alongside collaborative ventures with Deerhoof, Kid Millions and visual artist / sculptor Michael Mercil. Alongside their global performances the trio has presented workshops and masterclasses at Princeton University, The University of Michigan, The Ohio State University, The University of Missouri and Dartmouth College.
