June 2010: Berkshire County
Roomful of Teeth is pleased to announce its return to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) for an exciting two-week residency. During the first week, singers will gather to approach new styles of vocal production, and further their mastery of previously studied techniques. We will revisit the different modes of Tuvan throat singing, and we welcome the return of pop and broadway belting expert Gayle Lockwood. This year, Roomful of Teeth is pleased to invite Evie Mark, an expert in Inuit throat singing, to our team of vocal coaches. During the second week, Roomful of Teeth singers will prepare new music, incorporating our entire palette of vocal techniques, written by composers Caleb Burhans and William Britelle. The residency will culminate in a performance of these works on June 18th.
June 2009: Berkshire County
The first year’s project for Roomful of Teeth consisted of a two-part residency. In northern Berkshire County of western Massachusetts, eight singers gathered first at Williams College to receive training in three distinct, non-classical vocal techniques by an international field of experts: belting, yodeling and Tuvan throat singing (of which there are three discrete styles) . During the second and third weeks the project moved to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) for work with composers Judd Greenstein and Rinde Eckert who created new work with the singers. The residency concluded with a sold out performance of these newly created works at Mass MoCA on June 26.
